Your Guide to Oahu’s Lanikai Pillbox Hike (Kaʻiwa Ridge)

If you can only squeeze one hike into your Oahu vacation, my vote is for the Lanikai Pillbox Trail. It’s one of Oahu’s best short hikes, and it is a personal favorite of mine after eleven trips and many trails across Hawaii.

The 0.8 mile trail might be steep and rocky, but 360-views at the top make the quick scramble up so worth it. You’ll see the lush ridged Ko’olau Mountains to the east, Kailua Bay and town to the north, Waimānalo Bay to the south, and of course, the iconic Moke ‘Twin Islands’ in the east. On a clear day, you can even see the A‘alapapa reef peeking through the turquoise Pacific ocean!

Me standing on a grassy hill (Kaiwa Ridge) overlooking the Lanikai neighborhood and Lanikai beach. The sun reflects on the ocean, and two small islands are visible in the distance. The sky is partly cloudy, creating a peaceful and scenic view.

Lanikai Pillbox Hike in Kailua, Oahu

The Lanikai Pillbox Hike (Ka’iwa Ridge Hike) is a short but challenging hike up and along a mountain ridge overlooking Lanikai Beach and the Mokulua Islands in Kailua, Oahu.

Like many other ridge hikes on Oahu, Ka’iwa Ridge has rapid elevation gain, no shade, slippery terrain, unforgiving cliffs, and a few scrambles along the way.

But after only about a 20 minute journey to the top, you’re rewarded with some of the best views on the island, plus two abandoned military outposts.

Here are a few quick facts about the hike:

  • 🥾 Hike length: 1.6-miles roundtrip
  • ⛰️ Elevation gain: 613 ft
  • Time to hike: 20-30 minutes in, 20-30 minutes out. Plan on 1+ hour if you intend to spend time at the top.
  • 🏋🏽 Difficulty: Hard. But keep in mind that it is a very short hike. Most active people should be able to hike it without issue.
  • 🌅 Best time to hike: Sunrise! It’s the coolest time of the day, and you get to watch the sun rises over the ocean and Mokulua islands, illuminating the surrounding mountains, valleys, and bays with golden light. If you can’t make it for sunrise, aim for the late afternoon because the trail is both busy and HOT midday.
  • ⚠️ Things to be aware of: Lanikai Pillbox Hike parking can be difficult (but not impossible). Also, despite its short length and popularity, this can be a dangerous hike due to the rough terrain and nearly constant cliffs with no railings. People have died and been airlifted on this trail.

🌺 Fun Fact: According to a community-run organization in Lanikai, those structures on top of Ka’iwa Ridge are not actually pillboxes, since a military pillboxes is used for defensive purposes. The so-called Lanikai Pillboxes were created by the Coast Artillery in 1943 and equipped to monitor maritime activity, but never equipped with defensive armament. Getting to the Lanikai Pillbox Trailhead & Parking

Located in Kailua’s Lanikai neighborhood about 30 minutes from Honolulu, the Lanikai Pillbox Trailhead is next to the Mid-Pacific Country Club with no dedicated parking lot. Instead, your options are to get dropped off (bus or Uber), find parallel parking in the Lanikai neighborhood (can be challenging), or walk up from Kailua town.

Street parking is extremely limited, and it’s shared with people who live here AND beachgoers heading to Lanikai Beach (my favorite Oahu beach!) We took advantage of our jet lag, woke up early and had no trouble finding parallel parking spots close to the trail. Here’s a few parking tips:

  • ❌ Do not park in bike lanes
  • 📐 Make sure your car is parked at least 4 feet from driveways, 10 feet from fire hydrants, 10 feet from street corners, and 30 feet from stop signs
  • 🚙 Park facing the direction of traffic
  • 🤫 If you park early in the morning, consider locking your car quietly from the inside (instead of with the fob) to reduce noise for sleeping residents
  • ⚠️ If you’re unfamiliar with parking laws/regulations in Hawaii, check out this resource from the City of Honolulu

If you can’t find any parking in the Lanikai neighborhood, the closest public parking lot is at the Kailua Boat Ramp.

📍 Annie’s Tip: There is technically a second trailhead, but the main trailhead is marked on my free Oahu Google Map, along with 60+ of my other favorite trails, beaches, local businesses, and fun spots on Oahu!

Is Oahu’s Lanikai Pillbox Trail Worth Hiking?

If you are physically able, yes! The hike up might be a bit of a challenge but my husband and I were able to get to the top in only 17 minutes, and then the views up there are some of the best in Hawaii.

We did the hike at sunrise, which I highly recommend as you’ll have an easier time finding parking, the trail will be less crowded, and you’ll beat the heat!

If you do the hike, please hike carefully, pack out your trash, and be respectful to the residents in the Lanikai neighborhood.
