The PERFECT 1 Day Waimea Canyon & Kōkeʻe Itinerary

A trip to Kaua’i is simply not complete without gazing out at the colossal red-dirt Waimea Canyon! But beyond the half dozen canyon viewpoints accessible via car, there’s more—Waimea Canyon State Park connects to Kōkeʻe State Park, which peers over the verdant razor-like ridges of the Nā Pali Coast.

Afters spending 1.5 dreamy months exploring the Garden Isle over four trips, I’m sharing my ideal adventure-packed Waimea Canyon itinerary, which includes the can’t miss viewpoints overlooking Waimea Canyon and its waterfalls, the BEST Kōkeʻe hike out on an exposed ridge overlooking the Nā Pali sea cliffs and Pacific, plus some bonus surprises along the way.

Kokee State Park is a must visit place on Kauai

About Waimea Canyon & Kōkeʻe

The 14-mile long rust-red dirt Waimea Canyon is nicknamed “the Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” and the drive up and along the canyon’s rim will lead you to viewpoints and hikes overlooking the majestic Nā Pali Coast (from Kōkeʻe State Park).

The drive is windy but overall easy, and it’s so rewarding to see both the canyon and the lush razor-like ridge lines of Nā Pali all within a few hours!

Here’s a few things to know before visiting Waimea Canyon & Kōkeʻe:

  • 💭 Why is it red? Waimea Canyon’s red dirt is formed from rusted iron oxide in the volcanic basalt.
  • ⏰ Hours: Both parks are open during daylight hours year-round.
  • 💰 Fees: $5 per person plus $10 to park (one ticket covers both Waimea Canyon and Kōkeʻe); Hawaiʻi residents are free, and children 3 and under are free.
  • ☁️ Weather Tips: Expect cooler temperatures and breezes up at the canyon, sometimes you need a jacket! Cloud coverage can change in minutes, arrive early for the clearest skies, but if it is cloudy, wait a few minutes and the clouds may clear!
  • 🛟 Safety: Hiking at Waimea Canyon and Kōkeʻe can be quite dangerous, depending on the trail and weather. Start hikes by 9am to avoid the heat, avoid hiking if it has rained, bring PLENTY of water (more than you think), and wear the right shoes (Altra trail runners are my favorite). Download trail maps on AllTrails to stay on trail!
  • 📷 Best Viewpoints: Waimea Canyon Lookout, Kalalau Lookout & Pu’u O Kila Lookout

How to Spend a Day Exploring Waimea Canyon

I’ve visited Waimea Canyon four different times, on each of my four Kauai trips, and each visit has looked different! In this article I’m sharing my ‘ideal’ one day at Waimea Canyon, but there are many other ways you could structure your time based on how leisurely or adventurous you want it to be:

  • ✨ Awa’awapuhi & Nā Pali Adventure (My Favorite): For an epic, one-in-a-lifetime day, hike the incredible Awa’awapuhi Trail that ends at a thin ridge line between two stunning Nā Pali valleys, overlook Waimea Canyon at several viewpoints, then end your day with a sail past those same Nā Pali valleys on a catamaran dinner cruise.
  • 🌺 Leisurely Viewpoints & Nā Pali Dinner Cruise: Gaze out over the canyon and Nā Pali at the very best viewpoints, grab lunch at the adorable Kōkeʻe Lodge, and spend your evening on a once-in-a-lifetime Nā Pali Coast sunset dinner cruise.
  • 🥾 Hike to the river at the base of Waimea Canyon: Descend to the canyon floor on the Kukui Trail, then climb back up the dusty red dirt to the rim. Then, you’ll have time to enjoy lunch at Kōkeʻe Lodge, and even another short hike, like the Pihea Vista Trail along the Nā Pali Coast.

As you’ll notice, you can add-on an evening dinner cruise along the Nā Pali Coast, since the boat leaves in the afternoon at Port Allen, a 10-minute drive from Waimea Town. It’s really special to see the coastline from another perspective, especially if you just hiked out on one of the ridge lines on the Awa’awapuhi Trail!

Just be sure to check current departure times as they can vary throughout the year—you’ll want to arrive at the canyon early to finish up all your adventures and get to the boat on time. Alternatively, split these activities into two days if you have time!

8am: Waimea Canyon Viewpoints

📍 1 hour from Poipu / 1.5 hour from Kapa’a / 2 hours from Princeville

Use jet lag to your advantage and leave early, especially if you’re planning to do any of my recommended hikes! I recommend getting to the canyon by about 8am, but earlier would be even better. Here are a few viewpoints to stop at as you drive to the trailhead:

It costs $10 to park, plus $5 per person, but you only have to pay once. If it’s cloudy on your drive in, the views might clear up on your drive back, so keep your parking slip!

Hiking the Napali Coast on the Awa'awapuhi Trail in Kokee State Park

9am: Awa’awapuhi Trail (or Pihea Vista Trail)

📍 Trailhead: 15 minutes from Waimea Canyon Lookout / 5 minutes from Kōkeʻe Lodge / 3 minutes from Kalalau Lookout

If you’re an adventure-seeking experienced hiker like me, the Awa’awapuhi Trail is the #1 must-do hike at Waimea Canyon and Kōkeʻe State Park—in fact, it’s my all-time favorite hike in all of Hawai’i (even better than the beloved Kalalau Trail!)

In 6.4 miles roundtrip, you gain nearly 2,000 feet of elevation—but keep in mind, the elevation gain is on the way back! Enjoy the downward jaunt through ever-changing forests (with lots of shade) and reserve plenty of water (and energy) for the trek back.

Overlooking the Napali Coast from the Awa'awapuhi Trail

The view at the end is indescribable as you carefully traverse an increasingly thin grassy ridge-line, with 2,500-foot drops into the lush valleys on either side, and the sparkling Pacific Ocean below. There are almost no other views on the trail until you reach the end, so it’s not worth it to attempt this hike unless you’re completing it!

That said, you do not have to venture out on the ridge, the views from above are also exceptional (see photo above). Then, if go on a Nā Pali Coast sunset dinner cruise, you’ll get to see this very ridge and valleys from below!

We completed the hike in about 3 hours on a somewhat cooler day, with plenty of time to eat lunch at the end. We both carried 2-3 liters of water in the reservoirs of our Gregory hydration packs.

Hiking the Kukui Trail at Waimea Canyon

Alternative HIkes

Some other incredible hikes at Waimea Canyon and Koke’e include:

  • ✨ Pihea Vista Trail (easier): Walk as little or as long as you’d like along a red-dirt trail with views of the Napali Coast’s iconic Kalalau Valley. The perfect easier alternative to Awa’awapuhi.
  • 🥾 Kukui Trail (challenging): Descend into Waimea Canyon to the Waimea River. The climb back up is very challenging in the heat, with very little shade and 2,178 feet of elevation gain in a few miles. I prefer Awa’awapuhi over this one, but they’re very different!
  • 🌿 Iliau Nature Loop Trail (easier): Delightful 0.3-mile long loop along the rim of Waimea Canyon, with constant views and a variety of native plant species.
  • 💦 Waipo’o Falls via the Canyon Trail (moderate): Hike in Waimea Canyon to top of the stunning Waipo’o Falls, plus another small waterfall where you can swim!

For all my hikes I like to use AllTrails for trail information, recent trail reports, and the GPS map that notifies me if I’m accidentally venturing off trail!

My suitcase-friendly hiking essentials:

  • 👟 Altra trail runners: The comfiest hiking shoes ever! After hundreds of miles of hiking and three pairs (I lost one, burnt one… lol) I’ve never gotten a single blister. They have a wide toe box and are much smaller/lighter than hiking boots, so they’re ideal for travel!
  • 🎒 Gregory hydration pack: I love this lightweight, comfortable day pack that comes with a 3-liter water reservoir. It’s easy to throw in my suitcase and has plenty of room for layers and snacks on hikes of any length.
  • ☀️ REI sun hoodie: I usually hike in a tank top and have this UPF 50 sun hoodie in my backpack to throw on when the sun gets strong. It’s breathable, light, and much more comfortable than sunscreen…!

My husband has the men’s version of the Altra Lone Peaks (he’s the one that introduced me), a larger size of the Gregory hydration pack, and he prefers a merino wool sun hoodie.

Lunch: Kōkeʻe Lodge or Waimea Town

📍 Kōkeʻe Lodge is 5 minutes away / Waimea Town is 40 minutes from Awa’awapuhi

Though I’d recommend eating a lunch or snacks on your hike, you’ll probably be ready for some more food (or maybe a refreshing drink) by the time you’re done!

Located within the park, Kōkeʻe Lodge is an adorable historic lodge with a lovely restaurant, coffee, and small gift shop full of local goodies. There’s also a small museum about the history of the park onsite.

Just outside of the canyon, Waimea Town has a variety of options for food, drinks, and treats:

  • 🌮 Island Taco: My favorite place for lunch in Waimea! Quick, nutritious, and veryyyy tasty tacos.
  • 🍵 Nonaka Bakery: Fresh pastries and some of the best matcha I’ve had outside of Japan!
  • 🥥 Coconut Corner: Fresh coconuts, juice, and fruit!
  • 🍓 G’s Juicebar: Juice and acai bowls!
  • 🍧 JoJo’s Shave Ice: Shave ice is an iconic Hawaiian desert. Not my favorite, but kids will love this!

It’s also worth stopping at the Red Dirt store to buy a t-shirt or hat naturally dyed with Kauai’s iconic rust-red dirt.

Sailing along the Napali Coast

Afternoon & Evening: Nā Pali Coast Sunset Dinner Cruise (optional)

📍 Departs Port Allen / 20 minutes from Waimea

My optional (but highly recommended) end to your day at Waimea Canyon is to join this exceptional sunset dinner cruise along the Nā Pali Coast—I loved it so much I’ve done it twice!

You cruise out to the heart of the Nā Pali Coast at golden hour (best time for photos!) and then slowly journey back along the razor-like 5,000-foot sea cliffs, towering sea caves, and historic Hawaiian valleys. There’s an open bar of local beer and Kauai rum mai tais, plus a surprisingly delicious dinner!

Since you only need about half a day at Waimea Canyon, and the dinner catamaran tour departs only 20 minutes away from Waimea, combining both activities into one day is a great way to maximize your time on the island.

🌊 Avoid sea sickness: Before you leave for Hawai’i, order these natural motion sickness remedies—I learned the hard way that they’re not available on the island! After trying a variety of products, my favorites are these herbal motion sickness patches and nausea relief inhaler.
