☀️ My Bacalar Favorites 🌺

⛵️ Bacalar Boat Tour: Cruising through the lagoon of seven colors on a boat tour is one of the most popular things to do here, and my favorite boat tour only costs about $43 USD per person and includes a free kayak rental after the tour!

🌊 Los Rápidos: Float down a natural lazy river beside breathtaking stromatolites (believed to be the oldest living organisms on earth!!) Read my guide to ethically visiting Los Rapdios.

🌅 Sunrise Paddle Board: Pull yourself out of bed early for an unforgettable guided SUP experience with early-morning star gazing, a gorgeous sunrise, and a floating breakfast (Details here).

🌮 Best Food in Bacalar: My favorite places to eat in Bacalar include Mango y Chile (incredible vegan burgers with a lagoon view!!) and Mr. Taco (cheap delicious tacos).

🌴 Where to Stay: Lagoon view cabana at Habitas Bacalar, waterfront suite at Puerta del Cielo Hotel Origen, or a poolside suite at Blue Palm Bacalar in the heart of Bacalar town.

Where to Eat in Bacalar

1. Maíz Azul (My Favorite Restaurant in Bacalar)

[Possibly closed?? It was only a few months ago that I dined here and this Bacalar restaurant blew me away but it no longer show up on Google Maps. If anyone tries to visit and learns what happened to this place, please let me know!]

Maíz Azul is a perfect date night spot with delicious authentic food and an incredible ambiance and presentation.

The menu includes a diversity of rich moles, tlayudas, tamales, and more. Each meal begins with a complimentary appetizer of freshly baked masa fitters and delicious homemade salsas for dipping.

We enjoyed some of the best guacamole of our lives, a vegan pistachio mole, and tamale with mole verde, all doused in a flavorful salsa matcha. (Can you tell we love mole?)

Maíz Azul is a little more pricey than other Bacalar restaurants, but given the quality, its well worth it. Actually, my husband and I got three drinks, an appetizers, and two entrees and it was the same price as four drinks at a bar in downtown Bacalar, but much more satisfying.

Keep in mind that Maíz Azul is a bit outside of Bacalar Centro, so you may want to take taxi unless you don’t mind the 15+ minute walk.

2. Mango y Chile (Best Vegan Bacalar Restaurant)

Vegan or not, you need to dine at Mango y Chile while in Bacalar — there is a reason why it is one of the most popular restaurants in Bacalar even for meat eaters!

Trust me, their burgers will satisfy your junk food craving and the view of Bacalar lagoon makes the experience all the more enjoyable.

Mango y Chile’s menu includes savory waffles in the morning, and tacos, salads, and burgers in the afternoons and evenings. But make sure you get a burger—they’re the best!

My husband and I have eaten at Mango y Chile at least six times and are never disappointed. My favorite burger is the CrujiTOFU which is reminiscent of a fish burger (without any fishy smell or taste). The crunchy deep fried breaded tofu really hits the spot!

Each burger is completely unique and homemade — you won’t find any processed fake meat here, just delicious plant based food!

3. Mr. Taco (Most Popular Bacalar Restaurant)

Once a hole-in-the-wall taco joint, Mr. Taco has become the most popular place to eat in Bacalar over the past few years.

Tacos only cost $22 pesos ($1.30 USD) each and there are dozens of flavorful fillings to choose from. If you wish, you can also order a burrito or quesadilla as well.

Mr. Taco’s vegan options include mushroom tacos, eggplant (croquettes), and cactus with chickpea. If you are vegan, just be aware that most of the optional salsas contain dairy.

Mr. Taco also serves some incredible refreshing drinks like cucumber lemon water, horchata, and my personal favorite, fresh passion fruit juice (so good!)

Note: Mr. Taco does not accept debit or credit cards so make sure bring enough cash!

4. Mi Burrito

Mi Burrito is a food truck just a few blocks south of the Bacalar Zócalo (main square). It is a great place to grab a quick meal to-go or on your way between downtown and Bacalar’s cenotes.

There are several fillings to choose from, including a few vegan options, and all burritos come with rice, beans, cheese, sour cream, and some veggies. Of course, you can ask for yours to be made with no cheese or sour cream if you’re vegan like me.

5. Yerbabuena (Bacalar Brunch Spot)

Located a few blocks north of the main part of downtown Bacalar, Yerbabuena is a cute smoothie shop that is one of the best places for a healthy brunch in town.

Yerbabuena’s menu includes smoothie bowls, refreshing drinks, sandwiches, salads, and custom poke bowls with ingredients like beet hummus, falafel, habanero salsa, roasted peanuts, and so much more.

Yerbabuena is definitely the place to go if you’re looking for something that is both healthy and filling. I loved having their smoothies and poke bowls throughout our recent visit to Bacalar.

6. Siete Restaurant

We stayed at Habitas Bacalar the first time we visited Bacalar, and their onsite restaurant, Siete, blew us away!

We’d honestly never had such luxurious food, and we were very thankful that their menu includes filling vegan options since Habitas is a good twenty minutes from the other restaurants in Bacalar Centro.

Whether you stay at Habitas or not, you can dine at Siete and enjoy their deliciously crafted seasonal menu which always includes both meat and plant-based options, like ceviche with passionfruit dressing and beet tartar.

7. Agni Vital Kitchen (Bacalar Vegan Restaurant)

Agni Vital Kitchen is another Bacalar vegan restaurant that recently expanded to a larger property just south of Bacalar Centro.

Situated in a beautiful garden, Agni Vital Kitchen serves vegan spins on dishes from an array of cuisines. The menu ranges from Mexican classics like chilaquiles and ceviche to Asian dishes like tom yum ramen and okonomiyaki.

Final Thoughts: Best Bacalar Restaurants

Bacalar is a small town with some impressive food! In fact, though there are less to choose from, I thought the restaurants in Bacalar were much better than the restaurants in nearby Tulum.

I hope this guide to the best restaurants in Bacalar helped you find some great food! As you plan your travels, be sure to check out my other Mexico travel guides.
